How it works

Write it like you always do

Keep your pen and paper. Scrawl does the sorting.

  1. Scan your note

Take a photo of your handwritten list, pick one you already have, or type or paste it. One line on the note is one item.

  2. It's sorted for you

Scrawl reads the list on your iPhone and groups every item by store section: fruit and veg, bakery, dairy and so on. Amounts like "2 l" or "x3" are kept.

  3. Shop in your order

Sections come in the order you walk your store. Tap an item to check it off and it moves out of the way. Checked one by mistake? Tap Undo.

  4. It learns from you

Item in the wrong section? Press and hold it, choose Move to, and Scrawl remembers it next time. Fix a misread name and the same misreading is fixed on your next scan.

Features

Small things that help in the shop

Every store in its own order

Add the stores you shop at, each with its own section order and the sections you don't use hidden. Pick the store at the top of a list and it re-sorts at once.

Add to a list any time

Type more items, or scan another note into the same list. Items already on it aren't added twice.

The rest for next time

The store was out of something? Move the items you didn't find to a new list for your next shop.

Share as plain text

Send the list to someone without the app, sorted by section, in Messages or anywhere else.

Nothing lost by mistake

Deleted lists wait in Recently deleted for 30 days, and you can recover them with a tap.

Made for everyone

Works with VoiceOver and Dynamic Type, in light and dark mode.

Languages

What to expect

Scrawl is new, and we'd rather tell you straight what it does well and what it doesn't do yet.

Scrawl follows your iPhone's language and uses English for every other language.

Tested on many real handwritten lists. Most everyday items land in the right section.

Common groceries are known; less common ones go under Other until you move them once.

  • Clear handwriting reads best Scan in good light with the whole note in the picture. Very messy writing can be misread; fix the name once and Scrawl corrects that misreading on later scans.
  • Anything Scrawl doesn't know goes under Other Nothing is dropped. Move an item to its section once and it goes there from then on.
  • Choose your list language If you always write in the same language, set it under Store & sorting. Scanning and sorting then use only that language.
  • Apple Intelligence, where your iPhone has it On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Scrawl can read and sort your list with Apple's on-device model. Everywhere else it uses its own word lists.
  • Other languages aren't supported yet Lists in, for example, Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Arabic are read, but every item goes under Other. Want your language? Tell us.
